The Marriage of Anansewa – Summary, Themes, Characters & Language (JAMB 2026) 🎭📘

The Marriage of Anansewa by Efua T. Sutherland is one of the African drama texts recommended in the JAMB 2026 Literature-in-English syllabus. The play blends traditional African storytelling with modern drama, making it both entertaining and exam-relevant.

📖 Background of the Play

In many traditional African societies, folktales, myths, and legends were used not only for entertainment but also for moral instruction and social criticism. Among the Akan people of Ghana (and parts of Togo and Ivory Coast), this storytelling tradition is known as Anansesem.

🔹 Anansesem literally means “Ananse story”, where Ananse (the spider) is a clever trickster who uses intelligence, deception, and humour to survive.

Efua T. Sutherland modernised this oral tradition into a written dramatic form which she called Anansegoro, while still retaining key elements of oral storytelling such as:

Audience participation

Humour and satire

Moral lessons

Ananse represents the “Everyman”, reflecting human ambition, greed, wisdom, and folly.

🧵 Plot Summary of The Marriage of Anansewa

The play centres on Pa Kweku Ananse, a poor man determined to escape poverty. He instructs his daughter, Anansewa, to type letters to four wealthy chiefs, each believing he alone has been promised her hand in marriage.

💌 As a result:

The chiefs send gifts and money

Ananse’s financial condition improves

However, trouble arises when all four chiefs plan to visit on the same day for the traditional bead-drink ceremony.

😲 To escape exposure, Pa Ananse:

Pretends his daughter is dead

Collects condolence money from the chiefs

Later “revives” Anansewa through a dramatic ancestral invocation

Eventually, Chief-Who-Is-Chief, the most honourable suitor, is chosen as her husband.

📍 Setting of the Play

The play is set in post-independence Ghana, a period marked by:

Economic hardship

Rising cost of living

Social inequality

Pa Ananse’s poverty (leaking roof, hunger, unpaid school fees) reflects the struggles of many African families during this era.

✍️ Major Themes in The Marriage of Anansewa
1️⃣ Poverty and Economic Survival 💰

This is the central theme. Pa Ananse’s deceitful scheme is driven by desperation to escape poverty, showing how economic hardship can corrupt moral judgement.

2️⃣ Trickery and Deceit 🕷️

Pa Ananse embodies the traditional trickster figure, manipulating four chiefs and even faking his daughter’s death to achieve his goals.

3️⃣ Tradition vs Modernity ⚖️

The play balances:

Traditional marriage customs

Modern education and female aspirations

Anansewa represents modern values trapped within traditional expectations.

4️⃣ Role of Women and Gender Expectations 👩

Women are expected to:

Obey parental authority

Sacrifice personal freedom

Anansewa’s compliance reflects the limited autonomy of women in patriarchal societies.

5️⃣ Marriage as a Transaction 💍

Marriage is treated as a commercial exchange, with gifts replacing genuine courtship. Love is secondary to wealth.

6️⃣ Greed and Self-Interest 🪙

Pa Ananse’s actions are driven not only by survival but also greed, as he tries to benefit from all four suitors.

7️⃣ Satire and Social Criticism 🎭

Through humour and irony, Sutherland criticises:

Materialism

Hypocrisy

Abuse of tradition

Poor leadership

8️⃣ Power of Storytelling 📚

The play highlights storytelling as a tool for:

Entertainment

Cultural preservation

Social criticism

9️⃣ Fate and Divine Intervention 🌿

Despite deception, events end favourably, suggesting the role of fate and ancestral guidance in African belief systems.

Traits: Wise, traditional

She serves as the moral voice of the play.

👵 Ekuwa

Traits: Vocal, critical

She reinforces traditional values and questions greed.

👑 Chief-Who-Is-Chief

Role: Preferred suitor
Traits: Wealthy, sincere

He symbolizes genuine leadership and moral integrity.

📜 The Messengers

They represent tradition, ritual, and societal values, especially during the fake funeral scene.

🗣️ Language and Style
✔️ Use of Prose and Dialogue

Written mainly in prose

Simple, conversational English

Reflects everyday Ghanaian speech

🎤 Writer-Actor Technique

The Writer-Actor acts as narrator and performer, breaking the fourth wall and engaging the audience directly — a feature borrowed from oral tradition.

🎨 Imagery and Symbolism

Ananse as a spider weaving a web

Fake death and resurrection symbolise manipulation of truth

😂 Irony and Satire

Humour arises from:

False appearances

Deception

Greed masked as responsibility

🌍 Cultural Influence

The play uses:

Proverbs

Songs

Direct audience address

All rooted in African oral tradition.

✅ Conclusion (JAMB Focus)

📌 The Marriage of Anansewa is a comic but deeply critical play that examines poverty, marriage, tradition, and morality in post-colonial Africa.

For JAMB 2026, candidates should focus on:

Plot events

Themes

Character roles

Language and dramatic techniques

👉 Mastering this text can earn you easy drama marks in UTME.
