Barcelona put in one of their most spirited performances of the season on Tuesday night, but a heroic 3-0 win at Camp Nou simply wasn’t enough.

Barcelona’s defense of the Copa del Rey title has ended at the semi-final stage, as their dominant second leg victory couldn’t turn around the 4-0 deficit built up in the first leg. Atletico Madrid, battered and bruised over 90 minutes, clung on to advance 4-3 on aggregate and book their place in the final.

It was a night of what-ifs. A night where the roar of Camp Nou nearly made the impossible happen, but Diego Simeone’s side, true to their identity, refused to buckle when it mattered most.

In the first leg at the Estadio Metropolitano on February 12, Atletico blew Barcelona away with all four goals arriving in a stunning first half. An own goal by Eric Garcia opened the scoring, before Antoine Griezmann, Ademola Lookman, and Julian Alvarez completed the rout to hand Atletico a commanding 4-0 lead heading into the second leg. It was a nightmare in Madrid, a calamitous goalkeeping error, clinical finishing, and a Barcelona side that simply didn’t show up.

Coming into Tuesday’s second leg, the task was enormous. Barcelona needed to score four without reply to force extra time, or win by five to go through outright.

Barcelona came out with a very solid attacking plan and passed the ball quickly with purpose all over the pitch. It took them until the 30th minute, when a short corner routine ended with a beautiful move and assist by Lamine Yamal for Marc Bernal to tap in from close range. Camp Nou erupted.

Just before halftime, Pedri was fouled inside the box, and Raphinha stepped up to convert the penalty and make it 2-0 on the night. Barcelona went into the break with genuine belief. Two goals in the first half, two more needed in the second. The dream was alive.

The second half saw Barca try absolutely everything — crosses into the box, shots from distance, and a very strong penalty shout waved away by the referee and VAR when Matteo Ruggeri pushed Raphinha in the back. Marc Bernal grabbed his second of the night to make it 3-0, but the fourth goal, the one that would have sent the tie to extra time, never came.

In the dying moments, with six minutes of added time on the clock, Joao Cancelo crossed from the right to Marcus Rashford, who laid it back to Gerard Martin, but his shot from inside the box sailed over the goal. That moment summed up Barcelona’s night perfectly.

Atletico Madrid advance to the Copa del Rey final on a 4-3 aggregate scoreline. They will face the winner of the Basque derby between Real Sociedad and Athletic Bilbao, with the second leg of that tie set to be decided the following day.

For Barcelona, the pain is real — but so is the pride. Manager Hansi Flick summed it up perfectly after the final whistle, describing himself as “disappointed but proud.” A team that gave everything, undone by one catastrophic night in Madrid three weeks prior. The Copa del Rey dream is over, but with La Liga leadership still intact, Barcelona’s season is far from finished.
