The 2026 FIFA World Cup field is now complete. Following a dramatic round of playoff finals on March 31, 2026, the last six nations have been confirmed, rounding out a 48-team tournament that promises to be the most expansive and competitive edition in the history of the sport. The road to Canada, Mexico, and the United States this summer was long, grueling, and — in many cases — decided by the finest of margins.

world cup countries

The majority of the 48-team field qualified through their respective continental competitions without needing a second chance.

From the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Japan became the first nation to book their ticket in March 2025, with Iran, Jordan, South Korea, Uzbekistan, Australia, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia also coming through. Several of these nations, including Jordan and Uzbekistan, will be making their World Cup debuts.

From the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Algeria, Cape Verde, Egypt, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Morocco, Senegal, South Africa, and Tunisia all qualified automatically as group winners.

From the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) group stage, England, France, Croatia, Norway, Portugal, Germany, Netherlands, Switzerland, Scotland, Spain, Austria, and Belgium all advanced directly. Scotland return to the World Cup stage for the first time since 1998 — a significant moment for a nation that waited nearly three decades for this opportunity.

In South America, Confederación Sudamericana de Fútbol (CONMEBOL), sent Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Ecuador, Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, and Venezuela through.

From Confederation of North, Central America and Caribbean Association Football (CONCACAF), the three hosts — Canada, Mexico, and the United States, received automatic berths, joined by Panama, Haiti, and Curaçao, the latter becoming the smallest nation ever to qualify for a World Cup.

New Zealand secured Oceania’s guaranteed spot through the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC).

Then came the playoffs, where the drama truly lived.

On the European front, the UEFA playoff system featured 16 teams battling across four separate paths in single-leg knockout ties, with semifinals played on March 26 and finals on March 31. In Path A, Italy; three-time European champions and four-time World Cup winners, suffered one of the most shocking results of the entire qualification cycle. Having beaten Northern Ireland 2-0 in the semifinal, the Azzurri faced Bosnia and Herzegovina in the final, a match that ended 1-1 after extra time. Bosnia and Herzegovina then won 4-1 on penalties, eliminating Italy from the World Cup for the third consecutive tournament. It is an extraordinary fall from grace for a nation of Italy’s stature. Bosnia and Herzegovina will now appear in Group B alongside Canada, Qatar, and Switzerland.

In Path B, Sweden delivered a late, late moment that will be remembered for some time. Viktor Gyökeres scored an 88th-minute winner as Sweden came from behind to defeat Poland 3-2, denying Robert Lewandowski yet another World Cup campaign. Sweden qualify for the first time since their quarterfinal run in 2018 and will feature in Group F with the Netherlands, Japan, and Tunisia.

Path C saw Türkiye (Turkey) confirm their place at the tournament for the first time in 24 years, defeating Kosovo 1-0 on the road through Kerem Aktürkoğlu’s 53rd-minute strike. Türkiye will join the United States in Group D along with Paraguay and Australia. Kosovo, ranked 84th in the FIFA Men’s World Rankings, had caused a major upset in the semifinals by beating Slovakia 4-3 away from home, but ultimately could not complete the full journey.

In Path D, Czechia (Czech Republic) pulled off a penalty shootout victory over Denmark, a nation many had expected to qualify comfortably. After the match ended 2-2, Czechia converted three of their kicks while Denmark missed three, sending the Czechs to the World Cup for the first time since 2006. They will be placed in Group A with Mexico, South Africa, and Korea Republic.

Across the Atlantic, FIFA’s inter-confederation Play-Off Tournament was staged in Guadalajara and Monterrey, Mexico, featuring six teams from the AFC, CAF, CONMEBOL, OFC, and two from CONCACAF, with two spots available. In Pathway 1, the Democratic Republic of Congo faced Jamaica in Zapopan. DR Congo, as the top seed, had waited in the final while Jamaica edged past New Caledonia 1-0 in the semifinal. DR Congo ultimately prevailed, claiming a historic World Cup appearance; their first since 1974, and will compete in Group K alongside Portugal, Uzbekistan, and Colombia.

Pathway 2 produced arguably the most turbulent storyline of the entire qualification window. Iraq’s preparations were thrown into chaos by the outbreak of the 2026 Iran war in late February, which closed Iraqi airspace, grounded international flights, and left a significant portion of the squad stranded in Baghdad. FIFA intervened by providing a charter jet, routing the team through Jordan before they eventually arrived in Monterrey. Against Bolivia, who had themselves come through a tense 2-1 semifinal win over Suriname, Iraq found the resolve their situation demanded. Ali Al Hamadi headed Iraq into the lead from a corner kick, Bolivia leveled through 18-year-old Moisés Paniagua’s composed strike, but Iraq held on to secure a 2-1 victory. Iraq are back at the World Cup for the first time since 1986, and will enter Group I to face France, Senegal, and Norway.

The 2026 FIFA World Cup now has its full 48-team lineup, its groups are set, and its opening match is confirmed; Mexico hosting South Africa in Mexico City on June 11.

What this qualification cycle has demonstrated, above all else, is that global football continues to evolve, with emerging nations pressing established powers on every front. The stories written in the playoffs; Bosnia stunning Italy, Iraq overcoming conflict to qualify, Czechia holding their nerve against Denmark — are precisely why this tournament, expanded and spread across three nations, could well become the greatest World Cup ever contested.
