City Held to Dramatic 2–2 Draw by Nottingham Forest at the Etihad

A resilient Forest side denied City victory after twice falling behind

Manchester City’s Premier League title ambitions took another serious blow on Wednesday night as a determined Nottingham Forest side came from behind not once, but twice, to snatch a 2–2 draw at the Etihad Stadium. It was a result that left the home fans stunned, the visiting players celebrating as if they had won the league, and Pep Guardiola staring down the barrel of a seven-point deficit to league leaders Arsenal with just nine games remaining.

The Tricky Trees, in a relegation battle and low on confidence coming into this fixture, produced one of the performances of their season when it mattered most. For City, it was two dropped points that could haunt them come May.

First Half: City Take Control, Semenyo Breaks the Deadlock

Forest actually started the brighter of the two sides. Within the opening two minutes, Elliot Anderson saw a volley blocked before Morgan Gibbs-White directed a header straight at Gianluigi Donnarumma. The warning signs were there early, but City gradually found their rhythm and imposed their usual dominance.

Antoine Semenyo scored his fifth Premier League goal since joining City in January to give his side the lead on 31 minutes, instinctively throwing his left foot up to volley beyond Matz Sels from Rayan Cherki’s cross. It was a goal befitting a player growing in confidence, and it looked to be sending City on their way.

Forest had their moments before half-time, most notably when Nicolas Dominguez led a three-on-two counter and slipped Gibbs-White through, but the midfielder’s low effort lacked conviction and was gathered by Donnarumma. City went into the break in control, holding a deserved lead with Forest having contributed very little in an attacking sense.

The second half began much like the first. City in control, Forest struggling to get out of their own half. But football has a habit of rewriting scripts in an instant, and that’s exactly what happened just before the hour mark.

Ola Aina advanced down the right and delivered deep, Igor Jesus headed back across goal, and Gibbs-White improvised with a backheel finish that beat Donnarumma from close range to level at 1–1. It was a moment of individual brilliance in a game that had seemed to be drifting away from the visitors, and it completely changed the atmosphere inside the Etihad.

City responded almost immediately. From a Rayan Ait-Nouri corner, Rodri drifted into space and powered a header beyond Sels to restore City’s lead. The Spaniard, always capable of producing in big moments, giving the hosts what looked like the platform to see the game out.

But Forest refused to fold. Another equaliser arrived on 76 minutes when Callum Hudson-Odoi combined neatly with Anderson on the edge of the area, and the midfielder struck low into the bottom-right corner from distance to make it 2–2. It was a stunning effort, powerful, precise, and utterly deserved for a side that had kept fighting against the odds.

The final minutes were pure chaos. Ryan Yates headed narrowly wide from a corner, while Rodri fired off target amid penalty appeals that were dismissed after review. City threw everything forward in search of a winner, and the tension inside the stadium was almost unbearable.

Then came the moment that summed up the entire evening. Savinho’s 99th-minute strike looked destined for the net, only for Murillo to produce a stunning goal-line clearance to seal the draw — a moment of sheer desperation and brilliance that sent the Forest bench into raptures and silenced the Etihad for good.

City dominated possession with 70.1% to Forest’s 29.9%, managed 21 shot attempts to Forest’s nine, and held a 7–4 advantage in shots on goal. City also won six corner kicks to Forest’s one, while Forest picked up four yellow cards to City’s none.

The numbers painted a clear picture: City were the better team across 90 minutes. But football is decided by goals, not statistics, and Forest’s clinical edge — with three shots on target and two of them ending in goals — proved to be the difference between a City victory and a hard-earned point for the visitors.

Rodri (62′) — Manchester City

Title Race Implications

The timing of this result could not have been worse for City. The draw leaves City on 60 points, seven behind leaders Arsenal, who won 1–0 at Brighton on the same night — with nine games left to play, though City do hold a game in hand. The two sides are scheduled to meet at the Emirates on March 22, a fixture that is now a near must-win for Guardiola’s men.

For Forest, who remain 17th in the table but are now level on points with 18th-place West Ham, the point could prove equally significant at the other end of the table. With only four goals separating them from the drop zone, every point is precious — and this one was earned the hard way.

This was a match that had everything — momentum swings, moments of individual quality, heart-in-mouth drama, and a finale that will be talked about for weeks. Forest came to Manchester with a clear plan: stay organised, make City work, and take your chances when they came. They executed it to near perfection.

For City, it is a result that demands a response. With trips to Newcastle in the FA Cup and a Champions League last-16 first leg against Real Madrid on the horizon, the schedule is only getting harder. The title race is far from over, but nights like these are exactly why Arsenal remain firmly in the driving seat.
