The evening threw up everything the competition has come to represent – clinical domination, stunning comebacks, tactical battles and heartbreak, as the quarter-final picture came sharply into focus.
FC BARCELONA 7–2 NEWCASTLE UNITED (Barcelona advance 8–3 on aggregate)
There were few occasions in recent Champions League history that matched the sheer ferocity of Barcelona’s dismantling of Newcastle United at the Camp Nou. What began as a competitive contest quickly descended into a rout, with Barcelona producing one of the most complete attacking performances the competition has witnessed this season.
Barcelona struck inside six minutes to set the tone, only for Newcastle to respond emphatically; drawing level on 15 minutes before pulling the tie back to 2–2 by the 28th minute through Anthony Elanga’s second goal of the half. For a brief spell, the Magpies looked capable of pulling off something extraordinary. It was not to last.
The decisive moment arrived in stoppage time of the first half, when Barcelona restored their lead to make it 3–2 going into the break. That goal fundamentally altered the psychological dynamic of the tie.
The second half belonged entirely to the Catalans. Goals from Fermín López, Robert Lewandowski, who netted a brace, and Raphinha, who capped the win with an interception and finish in the Newcastle box, completed a seven-goal haul that leaves little room for argument about who the better side were. Raphinha also finished with two goals on the night.
The statistics reflect the one-sided nature of the contest in the second period. Barcelona registered 13 shots on target in total, with 63 percent possession and an attacking fluidity built around the creativity of Pedri, Dani Olmo and the irrepressible Lamine Yamal. LIVERPOOL FC 4–0 GALATASARAY (Liverpool advance 4–1 on aggregate)
Anfield delivered one of its trademark European nights as Liverpool turned on the style against a Galatasaray side that had arrived with a slender one-goal advantage from the first leg. The result was emphatic, and the manner of the performance underlined why Liverpool remains one of the most formidable teams in the competition.
Liverpool took control through a 25th-minute opener from Dominik Szoboszlai, and despite Galatasaray’s resistance in the first half which included Mohamed Salah missing a penalty with an attempted Panenka, the floodgates opened almost immediately after the interval. Hugo Ekitike doubled the lead on 51 minutes before Salah made amends for his earlier miss, cutting inside and curling a finish into the far corner for his 50th Champions League goal, a milestone that puts him alongside Harry Kane and Thierry Henry on that overall mark. A fourth goal on 62 minutes rendered the tie entirely academic.
The numbers tell the story. Liverpool registered 28 total shots, 16 on target, while Galatasaray managed just two shots across the entire match, one on target. Florian Wirtz was dangerous throughout, while Szoboszlai’s goal-scoring contribution from midfield added another dimension to Liverpool’s attack. Liverpool were disciplined to a fault – not a single yellow card across the 90 minutes.
This was Liverpool doing what they do best at Anfield: making European football look deceptively straightforward.
TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 3–2 ATLETICO MADRID (Atletico Madrid advance 7–5 on aggregate)
Tottenham gave everything, but it was not enough. A 3–2 victory at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was, in isolation, a commendable result against one of European football’s most structured and obdurate sides, and it ended an eight-match winless run for the club across all competitions. But with Atletico holding a commanding 5–2 advantage from the first leg in Madrid, the aggregate mathematics were always going to prove insurmountable.
Randal Kolo Muani opened the scoring on the half-hour, heading in to give Spurs the lead and inject genuine belief into the tie. Atletico hit back immediately after the break, Julian Alvarez striking just after half-time to douse the home side’s hopes, even if a fine curling effort from Xavi Simons restored Spurs’ lead on 52 minutes. What followed was a frantic, bookings-heavy spell as the match descended into a physical contest that suited Atletico’s approach, with four yellow cards issued in a ten-minute window.
David Hancko headed in Atletico’s second on the night on 75 minutes, all but ending the tie as a contest. But Tottenham refused to lie down. Simons converted a last-minute penalty, his second of the evening, sending the stadium into bedlam, though it made no difference to the aggregate outcome. Diego Simeone’s side, marshalled by Griezmann and Alvarez in attack, had done enough a week earlier and knew it. BAYERN MUNICH 4–1 ATALANTA (Bayern Munich advance 10–2 on aggregate)
Bayern Munich made light work of Atalanta at the Allianz Arena, delivering a polished and professional display to confirm what the first leg; a 6–1 demolition in Bergamo had already all but settled. Harry Kane led from the front, opening the scoring with a retaken first-half penalty after his initial effort was saved, before adding a brilliant second on 54 minutes. The brace brought Kane to 50 Champions League goals, reached in 66 games, a faster rate than Salah’s 97, joining the Liverpool forward and Thierry Henry on that overall mark on the same night.
Goals in the 56th and 70th minutes, from teenage substitute Lennart Karl and Luis Diaz respectively, completed a dominant second-half performance before Lazar Samardzic pulled one back for Atalanta in the 85th minute, as he did at the Gewiss Stadium in the first leg. Bayern dominated possession with 66 percent and registered 23 total shots, with an organised defensive structure — anchored by Jonathan Tah and Dayot Upamecano, that gave Atalanta’s forwards precious little to work with. Not a single caution was issued throughout the match. This was Bayern operating close to their ceiling.
QUARTER-FINALISTS CONFIRMED
The four sides joining the last eight from Wednesday’s action are FC Barcelona, Liverpool FC, FC Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid. They join Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid, Arsenal and Sporting CP, who had already secured their places in the quarter-finals.
