The last-16 stage of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League has run its course, and European football’s elite has been reduced to eight. Following a series of absorbing two-legged ties across March, the quarter-final line-up is now complete, setting the stage for what promises to be an extraordinary penultimate round before the semi-finals.

The Eight Clubs That Remain

The confirmed quarter-finalists represent a blend of continental royalty and resurgent forces. Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, Liverpool, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, Sporting CP, and Atletico Madrid will all contest the last eight. The draw has produced four compelling ties that cut across leagues and footballing philosophies.

Real Madrid advanced at the expense of Manchester City in a result that underlined the enduring quality of Carlo Ancelotti’s side. City had enough in their armoury to push the tie, but Madrid secured a 2-1 win at the Etihad in the second leg to progress on aggregate. PSG, meanwhile, were utterly dominant against Chelsea across both legs. A 5-2 first-leg win at the Parc des Princes was followed by a 3-0 victory at Stamford Bridge, leaving no room for debate about their superiority.

Barcelona’s passage was equally emphatic. A 7-2 demolition of Newcastle United at the Camp Nou in the second leg illustrated the sheer attacking potency that Hansi Flick has built, with the aggregate scoreline a statement of intent to their remaining rivals.

Liverpool were similarly clinical, dispatching Galatasaray 4-0 at Anfield in what was a measured and professional performance from Arne Slot’s side.

Arsenal secured their place in the last eight by beating Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 at the Emirates in the decisive second leg, seeing off the Bundesliga side with composure and tactical discipline.

Bayern Munich also eased through, defeating Atalanta 4-1 at the Allianz Arena — a performance that reinforced their status as one of the tournament’s genuine title contenders.

Sporting CP produced one of the more dramatic reversals of the round. After suffering a 3-0 defeat to Bodø/Glimt in the first leg, the Portuguese club mounted a remarkable comeback, winning 5-0 on home soil to advance 5-3 on aggregate — a result that few would have anticipated and one that serves as a reminder of the unpredictability that defines this competition. Atletico Madrid completed the quarter-final line-up with a 3-2 win over Tottenham Hotspur at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, advancing on the back of their grit and defensive solidity under Diego Simeone.

The Quarter-Final Draw

The draw has produced the following four ties:

Real Madrid vs. Bayern Munich — A heavyweight fixture between two of the most decorated clubs in Champions League history. The first leg takes place on Tuesday, 7 April at the Santiago Bernabéu, Madrid. The return leg is scheduled for Wednesday, 15 April at the Allianz Arena, Munich.

Sporting CP vs. Arsenal — An intriguing cross-continental clash with Sporting hosting the first leg on Tuesday, 7 April at the Estádio José Alvalade, Lisbon. Arsenal then welcome them to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, 15 April.

Paris Saint-Germain vs. Liverpool — Two of Europe’s most in-form sides collide. PSG take on Liverpool first at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday, 8 April, before the second leg heads to Anfield on Tuesday, 14 April.

FC Barcelona vs. Atletico Madrid — A blockbuster all-Spanish tie pitting two La Liga rivals against each other on the European stage. Barcelona host the first leg at the Camp Nou on Wednesday, 8 April. The second leg is set for Estadio Metropolitano, Madrid, on Tuesday, 14 April.

With the semi-final places at stake, the margins for error are gone. Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are arguably the tie that carries the greatest weight of history — two clubs with a combined 19 European Cups between them meeting at the business end of the competition once more. The Spanish capital will provide the initial backdrop, and the Bernabéu has long proven a formidable arena for European nights.

Barcelona’s form demands respect, but Atletico Madrid’s experience of deep European runs under Simeone ensures this will be far from straightforward. PSG’s sweeping form against Chelsea has elevated expectations around Luis Enrique’s project, though Liverpool under Slot have shown the defensive robustness to hurt any side on the counter. Arsenal’s clash with Sporting presents the Gunners with a potentially navigable route to the semi-finals, provided they manage the hostile atmosphere in Lisbon.

The quarter-finals kick off on 7 April, and the return legs conclude on 15 April. By then, four clubs will be left standing — each one a legitimate contender for the trophy that will be lifted in Munich on 30 May 2026.
