Nigerian Woman in US Charged Over Alleged Illegal Voting in Federal Election

A Nigerian woman residing in Massachusetts, United States, has been charged over allegations that she illegally voted in federal elections despite not being an American citizen.

The woman, identified as 56-year-old Gladys Adaeze Okafor, is accused of falsely claiming US citizenship while registering to vote and participating in federal elections.

According to reports, Okafor is a lawful permanent resident living in Lynn, Massachusetts. She allegedly submitted voter registration documents in which she indicated that she was a US citizen.

Woman Allegedly Voted in Federal Elections

Federal prosecutors reportedly allege that Okafor registered to vote in July 2022, signing a certification stating that she was a US citizen. The City of Lynn subsequently registered her as a voter.

Authorities further allege that she submitted another voter registration card in October 2023, again indicating that she was an American citizen.

The allegations have raised questions about compliance with US federal election laws, which generally prohibit noncitizens from voting in federal elections.

Reports indicate that Okafor allegedly cast ballots in the 2022 midterm elections and the 2024 presidential primary election.

Details of the Federal Charges

The case reportedly centers on allegations that Okafor falsely claimed American citizenship on voter registration documents and participated in elections despite not being eligible to vote in federal elections.

According to information cited in reports, she obtained lawful permanent resident status in December 2022 and has not applied for US citizenship.

Under US law, lawful permanent residents generally do not have the right to vote in federal elections. Voter registration and voting while falsely claiming citizenship can result in criminal prosecution.

However, the charges against Okafor remain allegations, and a criminal charge does not establish that she is guilty. Her case will be determined through the legal process.

Possible Punishment if Convicted

Reports state that Okafor faces a potential maximum sentence of up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $10,000 under the federal voting-related charge.

The possible punishment depends on the specific charges, applicable law and outcome of the case. A maximum statutory penalty does not mean that the defendant will necessarily receive that sentence.

The court proceedings will determine the next steps in the case and whether the allegations are proven.

US Authorities Focus on Election Law Violations

The case comes amid broader attention to voting eligibility and citizenship requirements in the United States.

Federal elections are subject to citizenship requirements, and authorities can investigate individuals suspected of violating election laws. At the same time, each case must be assessed based on its specific allegations and evidence.

The charges against Okafor highlight the legal consequences that can arise when a person is accused of providing false citizenship information during voter registration.
