A 28-year-old lady in Lagos rejected a ₦950,000 monthly job offer because the office provided free lunch. At first, everyone thought she was joking.

The lady had been unemployed for almost two years. She had attended countless interviews, borrowed transport fare more times than she could count, and was at the point where every family gathering felt like an interrogation.

Then she finally landed what looked like a dream job. Good salary. Health insurance. Hybrid work. Career growth. Everything. During the onboarding tour, HR showed the new hires around the office.

There was a gym, a lounge, a relaxation area, and a fully stocked cafeteria. Free breakfast. Free lunch. Free snacks. Unlimited coffee. Everyone was impressed. Except her. She asked HR one question:\

“How many people here have worked for more than five years?” The answer was over 70%. Three days later, she rejected the offer. When HR called to ask why, her response stunned them. She said any company feeding employees every day was trying to make them too comfortable to ever leave.

According to her, once your meals, friendships, social life, entertainment, and daily routine are all tied to one place, you slowly stop building a life outside work.

Her family almost disowned her. Her father refused to speak to her. Her aunt called her ungrateful. Her friends said unemployment had affected her reasoning.

But she didn’t change her mind. The shocking part? Two years later, she’s still unemployed today, and still insists rejecting the offer was the smartest decision she ever made. Was she protecting her freedom, or was she simply looking for a sophisticated excuse to remain idle? Me👇 Begging for 2k will make her grow. Misplaced opportunity. Some people mistakes are lessons for others. Lesson learnt.
