West Ham Boost Survival Hopes With Narrow Win Over Fulham

A narrow but important victory keeps West Ham’s survival hopes alive.

Crysencio Summerville delivered again!

The Dutch winger’s second-half strike proved the difference as West Ham United edged a tense, absorbing London derby 1-0 against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday evening, breathing fresh life into their Premier League survival bid.

In front of 27,191 fans on a night where every point felt like a lifeline, West Ham produced a disciplined, determined performance to claim three points that move them level with 17th-placed Nottingham Forest — separated only by goal difference — and within a single point of Tottenham Hotspur. For a team that shipped five goals to Liverpool just days ago, this was exactly the kind of response their season demanded.

From the first whistle, West Ham showed they had come to Craven Cottage with a purpose. Inside 30 seconds, Jarrod Bowen burst into the Fulham half and fed Taty Castellanos, whose sharp first-time effort was clawed away by Bernd Leno. It was an early statement of intent. Bowen, England’s World Cup hopeful and one of the Hammers’ most dangerous outlets, continued to cause problems, only for his follow-up attempt to be deflected wide.

Fulham were without their star winger Harry Wilson, who was sidelined with an ankle injury suffered in their 2-1 win over Tottenham on Sunday. His absence was felt. Without his creativity and directness, Marco Silva’s side leaned heavily on teenager Josh King to provide a spark. King showed glimpses of his potential twice, driving at West Ham’s backline, only to be cut out by timely interventions from Axel Disasi and Tomás Soucek. Alex Iwobi tried his luck from distance on a couple of occasions, but Mads Hermansen was equal to both efforts.

The first half remained goalless, though not without incident. On the stroke of halftime, King latched onto a chance and snapped a shot goalward, only for Hermansen to stick out a leg and divert it behind. West Ham went into the break level, but they had shown enough to suggest the goal was coming.

The second half began with renewed urgency from both sides. Leno produced a stunning fingertip save to tip a Tomás Soucek header over the crossbar just seconds after the restart — a moment that, in another game, might have shifted momentum entirely.

There was also a moment of drama when referee Matthew Donohue pointed to the spot after what appeared to be a foul on Tom Cairney inside the West Ham area. The Craven Cottage crowd erupted, but the celebration was short-lived. A VAR review quickly revealed that Cairney had actually kicked the calf of Castellanos before the ball — the decision was overturned, and Fulham’s chance was gone.

West Ham grew into the second half, growing bolder and more direct with each passing minute. On 65 minutes, it all came together. Leno, who had been solid throughout, misjudged a moment in his penalty area, and Summerville pounced with clinical precision to fire the ball home and put West Ham 1-0 ahead. It was the Dutch winger’s seventh goal in his last 10 Premier League appearances — a remarkable return for a player who has quietly become one of the most important figures in West Ham’s survival fight.

Sensing the game slipping away, Fulham’s manager made his move — bringing on Oscar Bobb and Rodrigo Muniz in search of an equaliser. But West Ham dug deep. Their defensive shape was compact, their commitment total. Iwobi and Muniz both fired narrowly over from distance, and in stoppage time, Hermansen produced a fine save to deny Emile Smith Rowe at close range and preserve the clean sheet.

The final whistle brought relief for West Ham and their supporters, who have endured a torturous season. It was professional, gritty, and exactly the kind of win that keeps survival bids alive.

Where It Leaves Both Sides

With 28 points from 29 games, West Ham climb level with Nottingham Forest on points, remaining in the relegation zone purely on goal difference.

Tottenham, who are also now just one point ahead of the Hammers and Forest, will have watched this result with anxiety.

The bottom of the Premier League table is extraordinarily tight, and Wednesday’s result has made it even more so.

For Fulham, the defeat ends a run of back-to-back wins over Sunderland and Tottenham and momentarily stalls their unlikely push toward European football. Marco Silva’s side sit 10th on 40 points, still firmly in the conversation for a European spot, but will need to rediscover their attacking edge quickly if that ambition is to remain realistic.

Summerville: West Ham’s Lifeline

When West Ham needed a hero this season, Crysencio Summerville has repeatedly answered the call. Seven goals in his last ten appearances is not just good form — it is remarkable consistency from a player who arrived at the club under the radar. West Ham manager Nuno Espírito Santo will know that without him, this season could already be over. With him, they remain very much in the fight.

The road ahead remains steep. Manchester City and Aston Villa are the next two fixtures on West Ham’s schedule — two of the most formidable sides in the division. But tonight, at least, they showed they can grind out results when it matters most.

West Ham are not safe. Not by a long way. But for one night at Craven Cottage, they looked like a team that believes they can stay up — and sometimes, that belief is everything.
