The Premier League doesn’t do quiet midweeks. Tuesday night’s action delivered chaos, upsets and one of the most remarkable results of the season, and now a massive five-fixture Wednesday night programme threatens to shake up the title race, European spots and the relegation battle all at once.

The Biggest Shock of the Week: Wolves Stun Liverpool at Molineux

André scored a last-gasp winner as Wolves stunned Liverpool 2-1 and earned back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time since April 2024. This one had everything. Brazilian midfielder André struck a deflected winner in the fourth minute of stoppage time to deliver a severe blow to Liverpool’s hopes of securing Champions League football next season.

The goals came in a breathless finale after a flat 75 minutes. Rodrigo Gomes came on to score a fine goal on the counter-attack well into the second half, and though Mohamed Salah soon brought Liverpool level, the dramatic winner went to the home side. It was Salah’s first Premier League goal for 122 days, and it proved in vain when André’s speculative shot deflected off Joe Gomez and into the net in the 94th minute.

The stat that will haunt Slot’s side most: Liverpool have now lost five Premier League games to 90th-minute goals this season, the most ever by a team in a single campaign. Those late collapses have long since ended any title ambitions, and they are now threatening Champions League qualification too. It was Liverpool’s ninth league defeat of the season, and they could drop to sixth if Chelsea beat Aston Villa tonight.

For Wolves, it’s a genuine lifeline. Manager Rob Edwards charged down the touchline in celebration after André’s strike brought rare joy to a season that has looked destined to end in relegation. This was the first time in Premier League history that a team inside the relegation zone scored a winning goal in the 90th minute or later against the reigning champions.

Sunderland continued their solid mid-table campaign with Habib Diarra’s second-half penalty securing a 1-0 win at Elland Road, leaving Leeds looking nervously over their shoulder.

Everton were convincing at home, beating Burnley 2-0 with goals from James Tarkowski and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to boost their European hopes.

Bournemouth and Brentford shared a frustrating 0-0 draw, with Cherries boss Andoni Iraola furious his side were denied what he believed was a clear penalty.

The standout game is Brighton vs Arsenal at the Amex. Arsenal sit top of the Premier League with 61 points from 28 matches, five clear of second-placed Manchester City. Brighton have won their last two Premier League games and on their day are capable of troubling any team.

A win for Arsenal tonight would stretch their lead to eight points, with Manchester City having a game in hand. Drop points here, though, and City could cut the gap to just two if they win simultaneously against Nottingham Forest.

Manchester City vs Nottingham Forest at the Etihad is equally pivotal. City have won their last four Premier League games and remain hot on Arsenal’s heels.

Forest, sitting 17th, are fighting desperately to avoid the drop. A defeat tonight would put serious distance between them and safety, and with Wolves showing signs of life below them, every point now counts.

Aston Villa host Chelsea in a game with top-four written all over it. Villa are fourth, Chelsea sixth, separated by six points. A Chelsea win closes that gap dramatically and piles pressure on Villa’s Champions League ambitions.

Villa have only one win in their last five league games and there are signs they could fall away after a brilliant first half of the season. Chelsea, meanwhile, are eager to prove their credentials and push firmly into contention.

Then there’s Newcastle vs Manchester United. A clash between two sides sitting in very different positions to where they expected to be. United are third on 51 points and need the win to maintain their top-four place; Newcastle are 13th and desperately need a response after a wretched run of form.

Finally, Fulham host West Ham in what is a genuine six-pointer at the wrong end of the table. West Ham sit 18th on 25 points. Lose tonight and the Hammers fall deeper into trouble with the season rapidly running out.

Arsenal remain firmly in control at the top. Liverpool’s late-goal curse is becoming a full-blown crisis. And at the bottom, Wolves have just reminded everyone that in this league, nothing is ever truly over. Tonight, everything could change again.
