Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has dismissed talks comparing him with legendary Nigerian forward Rashidi Yekini, insisting that the late football icon remains Nigeria’s greatest striker of all time.
Osimhen made the remark after Nigeria’s 2-0 victory over Algeria in the quarter-final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a match that sent the Super Eagles into the semi-finals.
Speaking during the post-match press conference, the Napoli forward played down the growing debate around his goal tally and potential to surpass Yekini’s long-standing record.
“It doesn’t matter if I equal or surpass Rasheed Yekini’s record,” Osimhen said. “For me, Mr Yekini is the greatest striker Nigeria has ever produced. I just want to win something important for my country.”
The 27-year-old’s comments come amid heightened attention on his international numbers. Osimhen has now scored 35 goals and recorded 14 assists in 51 appearances for Nigeria, putting him within touching distance of Yekini’s record of 37 goals in 62 games.
Despite the statistics, Osimhen stressed that personal milestones mean little without team success, making it clear that his focus remains on helping Nigeria lift a major trophy.
The Super Eagles will now face host nation Morocco in the AFCON 2025 semi-final as they continue their quest for continental glory.
