Football’s two greatest rivals have spent nearly two decades trading Ballons d’Or, Champions League trophies, and now, billion-dollar bank accounts.

In 2026, the numbers finally settle one long-running debate: Cristiano Ronaldo‘s net worth sits between $1.2 billion and $1.4 billion, according to estimates from Forbes, Bloomberg, and other publications, while Lionel Messi is estimated to be worth about $1.1 billion, though some trackers place him closer to $850 million. Either way, Ronaldo holds the edge — but Messi’s business model may prove more durable long-term.

Ronaldo’s wealth was transformed in 2025 when he officially became a billionaire after extending his contract with Saudi club Al Nassr. That deal remains the engine of his empire: his Al-Nassr salary for the 2025-2026 season is approximately €208 million per year, or roughly €4 million per week, and because Saudi Arabia has no personal income tax, his take-home figure is essentially the gross amount. Combined with bonuses and commercial ties, Forbes reported he earned approximately $235 million from soccer-related activities over the past year.

But football is only half the story. Ronaldo’s lifetime Nike partnership is reportedly worth more than $1 billion, and he commands between $2.5 million and $3.5 million per sponsored Instagram post thanks to a social following no athlete can match. His CR7 brand has become a genuine conglomerate: a 50/50 hotel partnership with Pestana Hotel Group operating luxury properties in Lisbon, Madrid, Marrakech, New York, and Funchal, with a flagship Riyadh hotel announced for 2026. He’s also pushed into fitness through CR7 Crunch Fitness and healthcare via Insparya, a hair restoration company, alongside CR7-branded footwear, fragrances, and lifestyle products.
Even his YouTube channel has become a serious earner. Launched in late 2024 as UR · Cristiano, it became the fastest channel in history to reach 50 million subscribers and had surpassed 78 million subscribers by March 2026, generating an estimated $10 million in annual revenue.

Messi’s approach couldn’t be more different. Rather than chase the biggest guaranteed paycheck — he reportedly turned down a far larger Saudi offer — he bet on ownership. His base MLS salary for 2026 is $25 million, with guaranteed compensation reaching $28.3 million, but the real value lies in his revenue-sharing arrangement with Apple, tied to MLS’s Season Pass streaming deal, which reportedly earns him around $50 million a year. His Inter Miami contract also carries long-term upside: he holds the option to acquire an ownership stake in Inter Miami after his playing career ends, and the franchise’s valuation has climbed to an estimated $1.45 billion or more since his arrival.

Off the pitch, Messi’s business portfolio is broad but less flashy than Ronaldo’s. He owns the MiM Hotels chain, launched with Majestic Hotel Group in 2017; Más+ by Messi, a sports drink brand from 2024; the Messi Store lifestyle brand; and 525 Rosario, his media and production company, along with a stake in Swiss winemaker MM Winemaker and Argentine restaurant chain El Club de la Milanesa. His endorsement roster includes Adidas, PepsiCo, Mastercard, Budweiser, and Gatorade, together generating roughly $70 million in off-field income per year. His real estate holdings are also substantial, with his company Edificio Rostower Socimi listing Spanish real estate assets worth roughly €223 million, including seven hotels and commercial and residential properties.

Zoom out to lifetime earnings, and the gap narrows. Ronaldo has collected a non-inflation-adjusted $2.1 billion in career earnings, the most by any soccer player in history, while Messi’s career earnings are estimated to have surpassed $1.6 billion once salaries, bonuses, and business income are included.

For now, Ronaldo remains the richer of the two, powered by a tax-free Saudi mega-contract and a diversified empire he began building over a decade ago. Messi trails by a few hundred million but is playing a longer game — banking on Inter Miami’s rising valuation and a media-rights structure that could pay off well after he retires. Both men, born within a year of each other, have redefined what athletic stardom can be worth — proving that in modern sport, the real competition doesn’t end when the final whistle blows.
