That’s exactly why the Messi comparisons stick. Both are undersized, left-footed wide forwards who cut inside from the right, both broke through at Barcelona as teenagers, and both play with a kind of joy and improvisation that can’t be coached. Watching Yamal drift past two defenders with a shoulder drop and finish with the outside of his boot, it’s hard not to see the ghost of a young Messi doing the same thing at Camp Nou two decades ago.
But legacy isn’t built on a highlight reel — it’s built on decades. Messi’s true separation from every other player in history came from an almost unthinkable consistency: eight Ballon d’Ors, four Champions League titles, a World Cup finally won in 2022, and over 800 career goals sustained across nearly 20 years at the top. That kind of longevity has never been matched, and it’s the single hardest thing for any young player to promise. Yamal is currently a Ballon d’Or contender, but contention isn’t conquest. He still has to survive the injuries, tactical shifts, aging body, and shifting expectations that have derailed countless “next Messi” candidates before him — from Bojan Krkic to Ansu Fati, ironically both at Barcelona themselves.
The international stage may end up being the real proving ground. Spain arrived at the 2026 World Cup as one of the favorites, and Yamal is central to their hopes, already showing flashes off the bench in the tournament opener against Cape Verde. A World Cup winner’s medal at 19 would put him on a trajectory even Messi didn’t match — Messi didn’t win his until 35. If Yamal delivers that now, with decades of career still ahead, the conversation shifts from “can he match Messi” to “how far beyond him can he go.”
Realistically, surpassing Messi’s legacy requires more than talent — it requires Yamal replicating almost two decades of near-injury-free brilliance, winning trophies across multiple eras of Barcelona and Spain squads, and doing it all while carrying a level of scrutiny no young player has faced before. It’s an extraordinarily high bar. But if any player currently on the planet has the tools to even attempt it, most inside the game agree it’s him.
