That’s exactly why the Messi comparisons stick. Both are undersized, left-footed wide forwards who cut inside from the right, both broke through at Barcelona as teenagers, and both play with a kind of joy and improvisation that can’t be coached. Watching Yamal drift past two defenders with a shoulder drop and finish with the outside of his boot, it’s hard not to see the ghost of a young Messi doing the same thing at Camp Nou two decades ago.
