Every year, thousands of candidates sit for the JAMB UTME examination, but only a small percentage score above 300. While many students blame difficult questions or CBT technical issues, the truth is this:
Top scorers know secrets that average candidates ignore.
If you’re preparing for JAMB 2026, this comprehensive guide reveals the strategies high scorers use to dominate the CBT exam.
Whether your target is 250, 280, or 320+, this article will show you exactly how to prepare smartly — not just hard.
What Is JAMB and Why It Matters in 2026
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) conducts the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) for admission into Nigerian universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.
Your JAMB score determines:
-
Your admission chances
-
Your course eligibility
-
Whether you qualify for competitive schools
-
Your Post-UTME prospects
For competitive courses like Medicine, Law, Engineering, Pharmacy, and Nursing, you typically need 270–320+ to be safe.
That’s why understanding JAMB 2026 secrets early is crucial.
SECRET 1: Top Scorers Don’t Read Everything — They Read Smart
Average students try to read all textbooks from cover to cover.
Top scorers focus only on:
-
JAMB syllabus
-
Past repeated topics
-
Frequently tested concepts
-
High-weight topics
Why This Works
JAMB repeats question patterns yearly. While questions change format, the core concepts often remain the same.
For example:
-
Biology frequently tests Ecology, Genetics, and Cell Structure
ADVERTISEMENT -
Chemistry often tests Organic Chemistry and Stoichiometry
-
Mathematics focuses heavily on Algebra and Statistics
-
English always includes Comprehension and Lexis & Structure
If you study randomly, you waste time.
If you study strategically, you maximize results.
Study Comparison Table
| Average Candidate | JAMB Top Scorer |
|---|---|
| Reads entire textbooks | Follows JAMB syllabus strictly |
| Studies randomly | Focuses on repeated topics |
| Avoids past questions | Practices past questions daily |
| Cramming | Concept understanding |
SECRET 2: They Practice CBT Mode Daily
JAMB is a Computer-Based Test (CBT).
Many students fail not because they don’t know answers, but because:
-
They’re slow with computers
-
They panic using the mouse
-
They waste time navigating questions
-
They misclick options
Top scorers practice using CBT software weeks before exams.
They know how to:
-
Use “Next” and “Previous”
-
Flag questions
-
Submit confidently
-
Manage time efficiently
How to Practice CBT Properly
-
Use JAMB CBT apps
-
Visit accredited CBT centers for mock tests
-
Practice answering 60 questions in 45 minutes
-
Train yourself to read questions on screen
Speed + Accuracy = High Score
SECRET 3: They Master Time Management
You have approximately 2 hours to answer 180 questions.
That means:
-
Roughly 40 seconds per question
Top scorers divide time wisely:
-
English: 45–50 minutes
-
Other subjects: 30–35 minutes each
They never spend more than 1 minute on a single question initially.
If stuck?
They skip and return later.
Average candidates panic and waste 5 minutes on one question.
Sample Time Allocation Strategy
| Subject | Questions | Suggested Time |
|---|---|---|
| English | 60 | 50 minutes |
| Subject 2 | 40 | 30 minutes |
| Subject 3 | 40 | 30 minutes |
| Subject 4 | 40 | 30 minutes |
SECRET 4: They Don’t Read at Night Alone
Top scorers understand brain science.
Reading overnight without sleep reduces retention.
Instead, they:
-
Sleep 6–8 hours
-
Study in early mornings
-
Revise in intervals
-
Use active recall methods
Memory improves with rest.
Cramming damages performance.
SECRET 5: They Solve at Least 10 Years of Past Questions
This is perhaps the biggest secret.
JAMB recycles concepts.
If you solve 10–15 years of past questions:
-
You identify repeated patterns
-
You learn question styles
-
You improve speed
-
You understand common traps
Past questions are not for cramming answers.
They are for recognizing patterns.
SECRET 6: They Prepare Mentally for Exam Day
Top scorers don’t panic.
They:
-
Arrive early
-
Avoid discussing answers before exam
-
Ignore rumors about system failure
-
Stay calm if systems freeze
Remember:
CBT systems rarely crash due to candidate mistakes.
Most issues are center-related and resolved quickly.
SECRET 7: They Understand JAMB Scoring System
Each subject carries 100 marks.
Total = 400 marks.
English is compulsory.
If you score:
-
75 in English
-
80 in Biology
-
85 in Chemistry
-
70 in Physics
Total = 310
Understanding this helps you target balanced scores.
SECRET 8: They Study Weak Subjects More
Top scorers don’t avoid weak areas.
They attack them.
If Mathematics is your weakness:
-
Practice daily
-
Watch tutorials
-
Solve step-by-step problems
Improvement in weak subjects boosts total score significantly.
SECRET 9: They Avoid Exam Hall Mistakes
Common mistakes that reduce scores:
-
Misreading instructions
-
Clicking wrong answers
-
Forgetting to review flagged questions
-
Submitting without checking
Always review before submission.
SECRET 10: They Prepare for Post-UTME Too
High JAMB score is not enough.
Top scorers prepare for:
-
School cut-off marks
-
Post-UTME exams
-
O’Level requirements
They think beyond UTME.
