Updated for Nigerian students | JAMB, WAEC & NECO Explained

University admission in Nigeria is highly competitive, and many candidates mistakenly believe that scoring high in JAMB alone guarantees admission. In reality, O‑Level results play a decisive role in determining who finally gets admitted. Even with an excellent UTME score, a weak or incomplete O‑Level result can disqualify a candidate.

In this guide, we explain how O‑Level results affect admission, how universities calculate O‑Level aggregate, and how schools combine JAMB and O‑Level scores to arrive at the final admission list.

What Are O‑Level Results?

O‑Level results refer to Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results issued by recognized bodies such as:

  • WAEC (West African Examinations Council)
  • NECO (National Examinations Council)
  • NABTEB (National Business and Technical Examinations Board)

These results show the grades obtained in subjects studied at secondary school level. Nigerian universities require a minimum of five (5) credit passes, including English Language and Mathematics.

Why O‑Level Results Are Important for University Admission

1. Basic Admission Eligibility

No Nigerian university can admit a candidate who does not meet the minimum O‑Level requirements. Even JAMB will not approve such admission on CAPS.

2. Course Qualification

Each course has specific O‑Level subject requirements. For example:

  • Medicine & Surgery: English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics
  • Engineering: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry
  • Law: English, Literature‑in‑English, Government/History
  • Accounting: English, Mathematics, Economics

Wrong subject combination = automatic disqualification.

3. Screening & Ranking

Universities use O‑Level grades to rank candidates, especially when thousands apply for limited slots.

Minimum O‑Level Requirements for Nigerian Universities

Most universities require:

  • Five (5) credit passes
  • Including English Language and Mathematics
  • Results obtained in not more than two sittings

Some competitive courses and schools prefer one sitting only.

O‑Level Grading System Used by Universities

Grade Meaning Admission Status
A1 Excellent Accepted
B2 Very Good Accepted
B3 Good Accepted
C4 Credit Accepted
C5 Credit Accepted
C6 Credit Accepted
D7 Pass Not Accepted
E8 Pass Not Accepted
F9 Fail Not Accepted

Only A1 – C6 are valid for admission.

How Universities Calculate O‑Level Aggregate

Most Nigerian universities convert O‑Level grades into numerical points.

Common O‑Level Point System

Grade Points
A1 10
B2 9
B3 8
C4 7
C5 6
C6 5

Example Calculation

Subject Grade Points
English B3 8
Mathematics C4 7
Biology B2 9
Chemistry C5 6
Physics C6 5

Total = 35 points (out of 50)

Converted to percentage:

35 ÷ 50 × 100 = 70% O‑Level score

How JAMB Aggregate Is Calculated

JAMB score is over 400 marks.

Formula:

JAMB Score ÷ 400 × 100

How Schools Combine JAMB and O‑Level Aggregates

Universities use different weighting systems.

Method 1: 50% JAMB + 30% Post‑UTME + 20% O‑Level

If a candidate has:

  • JAMB = 70%
  • Post‑UTME = 65%
  • O‑Level = 70%

Final Score:

  • JAMB: 35
  • Post‑UTME: 19.5
  • O‑Level: 14

Total = 68.5%

Method 2: 60% JAMB + 40% O‑Level (No Post‑UTME)

  • JAMB = 75%
  • O‑Level = 70%

Final Score:

  • JAMB: 45
  • O‑Level: 28

Total = 73%

Method 3: O‑Level as Tie‑Breaker

When candidates have equal JAMB scores, better O‑Level grades determine who is admitted.

Federal vs State vs Private Universities

Federal Universities

  • Highly competitive
  • Strong emphasis on O‑Level quality
  • Some courses accept one sitting only

State Universities

  • More flexible
  • Two sittings often allowed
  • Still strict on subject combination

Private Universities

  • Flexible admission process
  • Still require five credits
  • Faster admission timeline

Common O‑Level Mistakes That Cost Candidates Admission

  • Uploading wrong O‑Level results on JAMB CAPS
  • Missing compulsory subjects
  • Wrong subject combination
  • Poor grades in key subjects
  • Assuming JAMB score alone is enough

Importance of Uploading O‑Level Results on JAMB CAPS

Universities only recognize results uploaded on JAMB CAPS. Failure to upload:

  • Leads to admission rejection
  • Delays admission approval
  • Disqualifies otherwise qualified candidates

Always double‑check subjects and grades after upload.

Final Thoughts

O‑Level results are a major determinant of university admission in Nigeria. While JAMB opens the door, O‑Level results decide whether you can walk in. Strong grades, correct subject combination, and proper CAPS upload significantly increase your chances of admission.

Students aiming for competitive courses should focus on excelling in both JAMB and O‑Level examinations to secure their future.
