The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council of Achievers University, Owo, Ondo state, Prof. Bode Ayorinde, said that no fewer than 15 students of the institution have been expelled for sex video offence.
Ayorinde added that the institution’s management, has also dismissed 17 students for involving in fraudulent act to get examination clearance when they had not paid their school fees.
The founder of the institution, said this during the 19th matriculation ceremony of 936 students of the institution in Owo, cautioned the students to beware of of social media menace that could damage their destinies.
He said that” You put your phone before you and you’re dancing naked and they put Achievers University, I will dismiss you. Use social media for positive things.
” One of them who would have graduated was caught threatening that if Boko Haram come to Achievers University, he would deal with them, inviting Boko Haram. We refunded his N2.3 million and dismissed him.
” Use the money you’re paying here well not doing sex video or taking drugs. We have dismissed more than 15 female students on sex video offence.
” If you want to be a graduate and rule the world , you wont go into such act. Women are not meant for entertainment, they can rule the world.
” We also frown at bullying. You are all equal before us. It can’t happen here. If you’re caught, you are gone,” he said.
While saying that the institution has zero tolerance for drugs, the Pro- Chancellor, declared that any student caught would be expelled.
Ayorinde, narrated how three students were expelled for dealing with hard drugs, asking the students not to suffer in silence but report anybody caught in drugs
He however blamed some parents and guardians indulging their children and wards in wrong doings, asking them to keep reminding them on the need to be serious.
According to him, students are not allowed to engage in fighting and alcohol drinking because they attract expulsion as a punishment.
Ayorinde added that any member of staff and students found molesting anybody sexually would not be spared.
The Acting Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Amos Aremu, in his remark, said that the institution placed a premium on quality assurance, discipline, and academic integrity.
While advising the matriculating students, the vice Chancellor said that they should not see their admission as merely a ticket to higher education but an invitation to embark on a journey of self-discovery, intellectual growth, and societal impact.
Aremu said that they would face rigorous lectures, demanding lifelines, sleepless nights of study, the pressure of examinations and the need to balance intellectual pursuits with personal development.
According to him, expected challenges are not meant to deter the students but to refine, to build resilience, critical thinking, a lifelong love for learning, and awaken the leader in them.
While cautioning the students against the social ills that could derail their brightest future, he said that “our society grapples with vices that have no place in the hallowed halls of academia: cultism, which sows seeds of violence and division.
“Examination malpractice, which undermines the integrity of your hard-earned credentials, cybercrime; and other forms of misconduct such as sexual impropriety, reckless indiscipline and most especially the snare of drug abuse, which clouds the mind and destroys potentials.
Aremu promised that the university would provide a safe, nurturing, and intellectually stimulating environment where the students could thrive holistically.
Delivering the 19th matriculation lecture, ” Your University, your Network: Building Relationships and Opportunities” Mrs Ayobami Felix-Olaniyi admonished the students, to understand university networking, which she said was building meaningful relationships with people around them.
Felix-Olaniyi, added that building relationships with peer is the intentional process of forming and maintaining positive, collaborative and supportive connections with fellow students to enhance learning, personal growth and social development.
She also urged the students to engage their lecturers and the university staff in boosting learning, mentorship and career development.
Felix-Olaniyi, advised the students to leverage on experienced individuals outside the university who could provide guidance, mentorship and access to academic and career opportunities.
Students, she said” should maintain their networks and grow with them in ensuring that they are helpful, supportive and meaningful.
