Nigeria’s Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, has stirred fresh reactions on social media after saying he is unbothered by insults from supporters of Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, commonly known as “Obidients.”

Speaking during a public engagement, Umahi said the criticism directed at him does not discourage him. Instead, he believes it is proof that the work his ministry is doing is attracting attention and making an impact.

According to the minister, the constant attacks from some members of the Obidient movement indicate that his activities and policies are being noticed.

“Obidients are insulting me, but I enjoy it because it shows what I’m doing is touching them,” Umahi said.

The statement quickly generated widespread discussion across social media platforms, with Nigerians expressing differing opinions.

Supporters of the minister argued that public officials should remain focused on delivering projects despite criticism from political opponents. They maintained that criticism is a common part of public service and that leaders should be judged primarily by their performance.

On the other hand, critics viewed Umahi’s remarks as unnecessary, arguing that government officials should prioritize addressing public concerns over responding to political supporters. Some also noted that constructive criticism is an important aspect of democracy and accountability.

Since assuming office as Minister of Works, Umahi has frequently highlighted ongoing federal road and bridge projects across the country. His ministry has continued to provide updates on major infrastructure developments, with the government emphasizing road construction and rehabilitation as key priorities.

The comments have once again fueled political conversations online, particularly among supporters of different political parties. The Obidient movement, which gained significant prominence during the 2023 general elections, remains active on social media, where its members regularly discuss government policies and national issues.

As debates continue, many Nigerians have called for greater focus on governance and infrastructure delivery, stressing that political differences should not overshadow efforts to improve the country’s road network and other critical public services.

Umahi’s latest remarks are expected to remain a topic of discussion as reactions continue to emerge from political stakeholders, analysts, and members of the public.
