A total, comprehensive and indefinite strike action has been declared by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chapter of Taraba State University. The lecturers are taking this step to emphasize their demands and to dispute the state government’s claim that it is not indebted to its workers. The decision to strike is based on the government’s failure to pay earned academic allowances, promotion arrears, partial payment of salaries to staff, and unresolved staff pension and gratuity issues. In addition, non-implementation of agreements and perimeter fencing of the institution are also among the reasons for this industrial action, as stated by Samuel Shitaa, the Chairman of Taraba State University’s ASUU chapter.
