On Tuesday, the Kano State Censorship Board Banned two Hausa T.V. Series from being aired on Television.
In a letter that was directed to the Managing Director of Arewa T.V, the censorship board listed some codes that have been violated.
The board said a recent episode of the Kwana Casa’in showed a lady being held by men in a tricycle. This, the board, said is not in tandem with “our norms, values, religion and culture.”
The board said another series being aired by Arewa24, Gidan Badamasi, was not approved and licensed for airing.
“It is against this background that we are giving your TV station 48 hours from the receipt of this letter to stop showing Kwana Casa’In and Gidan Badamasi for not complying with the laws mandating all films shown in Kano State to pass through censoring and licensing by the Kano State Censorship Board and failure to comply with the above notice will attract legal sanctions.”
The censorship board also stated that any film that will be aired on TV stations must not “reinforce the corruption of private or public morality and must not encourage the use of violence”
Kwana Casa’in is funded by foreign, non-profit, non-political bodies, including the MacArthur Foundation. The series is a socio-political critique of people and governments.
According to a review of the movie by a University of Cologne student
“If it were released before the elections, some politicians would certainly feel exposed and indicted.”
Gidan Badamasi is a comedy which centres around controversial “Badamasi Family.” The drama revolves around Bamasi’s family that gang up against him when he fails to fulfill his promises.
