Manchester City claimed the 2025/26 Carabao Cup on Sunday, defeating Arsenal 2-0 at Wembley Stadium to lift their ninth League Cup trophy and hand Pep Guardiola a record fifth triumph in the competition. The hero was an unlikely one — 21-year-old left-back Nico O’Reilly, who scored twice in the space of five minutes to secure the trophy on his birthday weekend.
The match largely told two very different stories across its two halves. Arsenal were the dominant side in a below-par first period, with City goalkeeper James Trafford producing a brilliant triple save to deny Kai Havertz and Bukayo Saka twice to keep the scoreline level at the break. Mikel Arteta’s side were the better team for long stretches, but their inability to convert proved costly.
After the interval, City re-emerged with renewed energy, with wingers Jeremy Doku and Antoine Semenyo a constant threat down their respective flanks. The decisive moment arrived when Arsenal’s cup goalkeeper made a costly error. Kepa Arrizabalaga, selected ahead of first-choice stopper David Raya, allowed Rayan Cherki’s right-wing cross to squirm through his hands, leaving O’Reilly with an open goal at the far post. Before Arsenal could regroup, City struck again. A second right-wing cross from Matheus Nunes found O’Reilly arriving late at the back post, and the young full-back planted a firm header into the far corner to put City into an unassailable lead.
Arsenal pushed late through substitutes, with Riccardo Calafiori’s well-struck volley clipping the outside of the post and Gabriel Jesus’ looping header coming back off the crossbar, but the Gunners could not generate the clear-cut chances needed to get back into the match. City ran out deserved winners.
For Guardiola, the moment carried significant historical weight. The win made him the most successful manager in League Cup history with five titles, surpassing Sir Alex Ferguson, Brian Clough, and Jose Mourinho.
For Arsenal, it extended a painful record — they have now lost the League Cup final seven times, the most runner-up finishes in the history of the competition.
What it means going forward
The result carries consequences that stretch well beyond a single cup final, with both clubs still deeply involved in the race for multiple honours.
For Manchester City, the trophy provides more than just silverware — it delivers a significant psychological injection at a critical point of the season. City are nine points behind Arsenal in the Premier League, albeit with a game in hand, and the two sides meet again at the Etihad Stadium on April 19.
City also face an FA Cup quarter-final against Liverpool on April 4 and a Champions League quarter-final in the same month, meaning Guardiola’s side could still be competing for three more trophies. Winning at Wembley will lift the dressing room and restore confidence in a squad that has shown flashes of genuine quality this season but has also been inconsistent. Whether this result can serve as a launchpad for a late Premier League charge remains to be seen, but City now enter that April Etihad showdown with Arsenal in a very different frame of mind.
For Arsenal, the defeat stings — but it is important to place it in its proper context. The Gunners remain firmly in control of the Premier League title race, nine points clear of City having played a game more, and hold favourable draws in both the FA Cup and the Champions League.
Arsenal advanced to the Champions League quarter-finals after a 3-1 aggregate defeat of Bayer Leverkusen and will face Sporting CP in the next round. In the FA Cup, they are through to the quarter-finals, where they travel to Southampton.
The primary concern for Arteta will be how his squad responds mentally. Arsenal have experienced final heartbreak under his management before, and the manner of this defeat, squandering a dominant first-half performance before conceding twice in four second-half minutes, will have hurt. The decision to start Kepa over Raya will face scrutiny, and Arsenal’s tendency to fall flat in major occasions at Wembley is a narrative that will not go away quietly.
The real test of Arsenal’s season, however, comes in the weeks ahead. Their next Premier League fixture takes them to Bournemouth, before the defining April run begins, headlined by the trip to the Etihad on April 19. A nine-point lead is meaningful, but not insurmountable if City win their game in hand and continue to build momentum.
In short: City have their first trophy of the campaign and the confidence that comes with it. Arsenal have lost a final they wanted badly, but retain every advantage in the competitions that matter most. How each club navigates the next six weeks will ultimately define whether this Wembley result was a turning point or merely a footnote.
