Galatasaray defeated Liverpool 1–0 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie at RAMS Park on Tuesday, with Mario Lemina’s seventh-minute header proving the decisive moment in a match that offered chances at both ends but ultimately punished Liverpool’s chronic vulnerability to set pieces.

It was the second time this season that Arne Slot’s side fell to a defeat in Istanbul. The first came in the league phase in September, when Victor Osimhen converted a penalty.

The recurring scoreline masks different storylines, but the underlying problem is the same: Liverpool cannot defend corners, and Galatasaray are ruthless enough to make them pay.

Liverpool began well. Florian Wirtz drove wide from distance in the second minute, Dominik Szoboszlai followed with a powerful effort that was blocked in the third, and Mohamed Salah was caught offside in a promising position shortly after. The opening exchanges suggested Slot had sent his team out to impose themselves on the occasion. What followed suggested otherwise.

In the sixth minute, Noa Lang lost possession trying to thread a pass into the area, and Liverpool’s clearance handed Galatasaray a corner. Gabriel Sara whipped it in, Osimhen rose and nodded it down to the back post, and Lemina, arriving with perfect timing guided his header past Giorgi Mamardashvili. It was the tenth goal Liverpool had conceded from a corner in all competitions this season. The home crowd responded with a wall of noise and a cascade of flares that lit up the Istanbul skyline.

That pre-match atmosphere had already been charged before a ball was kicked. The ultrAslan supporter group unveiled a large tifo in honour of Osimhen, bearing his image alongside that of his late mother, who died when the Nigerian was barely two years old.

The tribute drew on one of European football’s more remarkable personal journeys — Osimhen grew up in poverty in Lagos, sleeping in a church, and scraping together boots from a landfill site. The striker, visibly moved, wept during the pre-match ceremony as teammate Lucas Torreira stepped across to offer comfort. When the whistle went, he channelled everything into the contest.

Osimhen was a constant problem for Liverpool’s defence throughout. Ibrahima Konate, who arrived in Istanbul with a reputation as one of Europe’s most assured centre-backs was repeatedly beaten in the air and rattled in one-on-one situations.

A near-identical scenario to the goal almost repeated itself in the 12th minute when Van Dijk’s headed clearance fell to Ismail Jakobs, whose cross found Osimhen unmarked at the back post; the header went just wide. Davinson Sanchez then powered a free header on goal that Mamardashvili turned wide. Liverpool, for long stretches of the first half, simply could not deal with the aerial threat Galatasaray generated from wide areas.

Galatasaray thought they had extended their lead at the start of the second half when Konate got his feet all wrong and Osimhen finished from close range in the 62nd minute. The Nigerian wheeled away in celebration, but the flag was up. VAR upheld the decision controversially, with Aydin Yilmaz adjudged to have been in an offside position and interfering with play despite not touching the ball. It was a decision that drew considerable debate, both inside the stadium and among those watching remotely. Liverpool, relieved, regrouped.

Slot made double changes at half-time, introducing Andy Robertson for Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong in place of Salah. The adjustments brought more width and directness to Liverpool’s play.

Wirtz, making his first start since mid-February, grew into the second period and forced Ugurcan Cakir into a low save. Alexis Mac Allister steered an effort inches wide from a promising position. Hugo Ekitike, lively throughout, sent a header over the bar and later drew a sharp stop from Cakir when clean through on goal following a Galatasaray defensive error.

Liverpool believed they had equalised when a scramble from a corner saw the ball cross the line, but VAR ruled the effort out. Konate’s arm deemed to have made contact with the ball in the build-up. Four yellow cards across the afternoon reflected Liverpool’s mounting frustration, with a late booking for Szoboszlai and one in stoppage time adding to earlier cautions.

Galatasaray also had further moments of danger. Osimhen forced Mamardashvili into a fine stop from a tight angle, and Torreira met another Sara set piece at the back post, diverting his header just over. The scoreline remained 1–0 at the final whistle, which accurately reflected the flow of the contest. Galatasaray registered 11 shots to Liverpool’s 15, but the hosts were more composed in the moments that defined the game.

For the second leg at Anfield on 18 March, Liverpool must overturn a one-goal deficit on a ground where they have managed such turnarounds before. Wirtz and Szoboszlai both showed signs of improvement as the game progressed, and Liverpool will take some encouragement from their second-half performance. The suspended Sanchez, booked late on and unavailable for the return removes one of Galatasaray’s most commanding defensive presences from the equation.

Galatasaray travel to Anfield without their away supporters, following UEFA’s ban stemming from crowd disturbances during the Juventus playoff tie. CAS rejected the club’s appeal, and Buruk’s side must hold their lead in an empty away end at a full Anfield. The combination of Sanchez’s suspension and the absence of travelling fans represent real obstacles.

The tie remains open. But Liverpool’s defensive fragility against aerial delivery and their wastefulness in front of goal are problems that do not resolve themselves between Tuesday and next Wednesday. Galatasaray know it, and they will arrive at Anfield with full belief that one goal is a lead they can defend.
