Tottenham Hotspur’s wretched season hit a new low on Thursday night as Crystal Palace dismantled them 3–1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London, a match that had everything: VAR drama, a stunning opener, a game-changing red card, a chaotic eight-minute stoppage time meltdown, and thousands of Spurs fans streaming toward the exits in disgust long before the final whistle.

Spurs started the night only one point outside the bottom three after West Ham won away to Fulham on Wednesday, making relegation a very real possibility for the North London club. What unfolded on Thursday made that reality feel even more inevitable.

The tension was palpable from the first whistle. Souza, on his full debut for Spurs, was booked after just seven minutes for a poor challenge on Daniel Muñoz, who limped off the pitch shortly after. In came Nathaniel Clyne as an early enforced change for Palace.

On the half-hour mark, Palace appeared to have taken the lead when Ismaïla Sarr broke away and finished past Vicario, but a lengthy VAR check ruled the goal out for the narrowest of offsides, with Sarr’s face adjudged to have strayed fractionally beyond the last defender.

The Tottenham crowd exhaled.

Moments after the VAR reprieve, a deflected Mathys Tel strike forced a corner, and Archie Gray brilliantly spun away from Wharton before teeing up Dominic Solanke to fire home a 34th-minute opener.

The stadium erupted. Spurs were ahead, fortune was turning, or so it seemed.

It lasted exactly four minutes.

Micky van de Ven dragged Sarr down from behind inside the penalty area, giving away a penalty and receiving a straight red card for denying a clear goalscoring opportunity. It was a moment of sheer recklessness that defined everything that followed.

Sarr stepped up and confidently converted the resulting penalty in the 40th minute, bringing Crystal Palace level. Down to ten men, Tottenham’s tactical structure collapsed almost instantly.

What happened next was extraordinary. Adam Wharton produced two moments of brilliance in eight first-half minutes of stoppage time. The first stemmed from a high recovery by Guessand, who flicked the ball into Wharton’s path. Threading an intricate pass for Strand Larsen to race onto, the Norwegian smashed the ball between Vicario’s legs from a tight angle for Palace’s second.

Palace’s third, scored in the seventh minute of stoppage time was even better. Jaydee Canvot played it into Wharton’s feet, and the England international lofted an audacious pass over the Tottenham defence, allowing Sarr to stretch and poke it in for his second of the night.

Three goals in eight first-half minutes of stoppage time. An implosion of historic proportions.

Loud boos greeted the half-time whistle. By the time the second half was underway, swathes of supporters were already heading for the exits.

The anger spilling around the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium was not the hot, reactive kind, it was the cold, resigned fury of a fanbase that has finally had enough.

This is a club that has now gone 11 Premier League matches without a win, a new club record, and has suffered a 4–1 derby humiliation at the hands of Arsenal and consecutive defeats to Fulham, Newcastle, Manchester United, and now Crystal Palace.

To their credit, the ten men of Spurs refused to completely crumble in the second half. Kevin Danso was denied by Dean Henderson, Gray had an effort blocked, and Solanke tested the goalkeeper with a low effort.

Richarlison and Xavi Simons were introduced with 16 minutes remaining in a desperate bid to find a way back, but Palace were professional, disciplined, and entirely comfortable managing their lead.

Crystal Palace controlled 60% of possession throughout the match, and while both teams registered four shots on target, Palace’s 1.78 edged Tottenham’s 1.57, a stat that understates just how clinical the visitors were at the moments that mattered most.

Crystal Palace secured consecutive away league wins at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the first time ever, climbing to 13th in the table.

For Spurs, the table is now a source of genuine dread. They sit 16th on 29 points, just one point above the relegation zone, with Liverpool at Anfield up next on March 15th, a fixture that carries a 71% win probability for the hosts.

Igor Tudor, the interim Spurs manager, watched his side rally in the second half without conceding again, but this fifth consecutive defeat will leave the Croatian facing serious questions about whether he is the man to drag this club away from the bottom three.

Tottenham Hotspur are in a relegation battle that is growing more serious by the week, and Thursday night proved beyond any doubt that unless something changes fast, the unthinkable could yet become reality.
