Fashion’s most anticipated night of the year is coming into full focus. The Metropolitan Museum of Art officially unveiled the final details for the 2026 Met Gala on February 23, and everything from the theme to the guest roster signals that this year’s event is poised to be one for the history books. Mark your calendars, set your reminders, and prepare your opinions — the Met Gala returns on Monday, May 4, 2026.

The Theme: Costume Art
This year’s Met Gala is anchored by the Costume Institute’s spring 2026 exhibition, titled Costume Art. Featuring nearly 400 objects drawn from The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s vast permanent collection, Costume Art spans an extraordinary 5,000 years of history, focusing primarily on Western art from prehistory to the present.

Organized around a series of thematic body types, the exhibition explores the inextricable relationship between garments and the human form. As the Met stated in its official press release, the show will “highlight that artistic representations of the body are shaped by the garments that clothe them, and that the garments, in turn, are shaped by the bodies which they clothe.” In simpler terms, the exhibition argues that clothing has always been central to how we understand and represent the human experience — and it always will be.

The show will be on view at The Met Fifth Avenue from May 10, 2026 through January 10, 2027, giving the public an extended window to engage with what promises to be a landmark cultural exhibition.

Adding further institutional significance, Costume Art will inaugurate The Met’s newly named Condé Nast Galleries — nearly 12,000 square feet of dedicated exhibition space named in honor of the late founder of the media empire, recognizing a major lead gift from the organization.

The Dress Code: “Fashion is Art”
If the theme is the intellectual foundation, the dress code is where it gets personal. This year, guests have been invited to interpret the directive “Fashion is Art” — a mandate that is both gloriously open-ended and remarkably specific in spirit.

Rather than pointing to a single historical period or designer, the dress code challenges attendees to treat their red carpet look as a wearable masterpiece. Think sculptural silhouettes, painterly textiles, garments that blur the boundary between couture and canvas.

Met curator Andrew Bolton, the creative mind behind the exhibition, has spoken about fashion’s central role across every department of the museum, noting that “what connects every curatorial department and what connects every single gallery in the museum is fashion, or the dressed body.” That philosophy is now the explicit brief for every celebrity, designer, and tastemaker walking the steps.

The wide interpretive range of “Fashion is Art” has already generated significant buzz — and some controversy. Some critics have called the dress code the “laziest” in recent memory for its open-ended nature, while others argue its ambiguity is precisely what makes it exciting. Either way, it guarantees a wildly diverse red carpet.

The Co-Chairs
The 2026 Gala will be co-chaired by four powerhouses who collectively represent the worlds of music, film, sport, and fashion:

Beyoncé — global music icon, cultural force, and one of the most influential figures in entertainment today.

Nicole Kidman — Oscar-winning actress and longtime fashion ambassador.

Venus Williams — tennis legend and passionate advocate for design through her own fashion line.

And anchoring the proceedings, as she has since 1995, Anna Wintour — Vogue’s editor-in-chief emerita and chief content officer of Condé Nast, the irreplaceable architect of the Met Gala as we know it.

The co-chair lineup reflects the exhibition’s ambition to speak across disciplines — connecting fashion not just to the art world, but to music, athletics, and cinema.

The Gala Host Committee
The Host Committee is co-chaired by Anthony Vaccarello, the acclaimed creative director of Saint Laurent, and Zoë Kravitz, actress and style icon whose fashion instincts have made her one of the most watched figures on any red carpet.

The broader Host Committee is a genuinely diverse and compelling group spanning fashion, music, sport, and the arts. Members include Sabrina Carpenter, Doja Cat, Gwendoline Christie, Alex Consani, Misty Copeland, Elizabeth Debicki, Lena Dunham, Paloma Elsesser, LISA (of BLACKPINK), Chloe Malle, Sam Smith, Teyana Taylor, Lauren Wasser, Anna Weyant, A’ja Wilson, and Yseult.
Newly announced additions to the committee further elevate the roster: Adut Akech, Angela Bassett, Sinéad Burke, Rebecca Hall, Aimee Mullins, Tschabalala Self, Amy Sherald, and Chase Sui Wonders. The inclusion of visual artists like Tschabalala Self and Amy Sherald is particularly fitting, given a theme that explicitly bridges fashion and fine art.

Honorary Chairs & Lead Sponsors
Serving as Honorary Chairs for the evening are Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos, who are also the lead sponsors for both the Gala and the Costume Art exhibition itself.

Their involvement provides the financial backbone that makes the Costume Institute’s ambitious programming possible. The annual benefit remains the primary funding source for The Costume Institute’s exhibitions and operations — making the Gala not just a spectacle but a genuine act of institutional support.

What to Expect on the Night
The Met Gala has always been equal parts fundraiser, cultural statement, and fashion theater — and 2026 looks set to deliver on all three fronts. With a theme rooted in art history and a dress code that invites genuine creativity, expect the red carpet to be more visually ambitious than in recent years.

The Beyoncé factor alone guarantees that her look will dominate global conversation for days.
Beyond the Gala itself, The Met has confirmed a series of public programs and events tied to the Costume Art exhibition throughout its run, though specific programming details are set to be released at a later date.

An illustrated exhibition catalogue is also in the works, featuring new imagery from artist Julie Wolfe, photographer Paul Westlake, and stylist and editor Nathalie Agussol, with scholarly contributions from Dr. Llewellyn Negrin and author Andrew Solomon. The book will be published by The Metropolitan Museum of Art and distributed internationally by Yale University Press, with a limited-edition deluxe version available exclusively at The Met Store.
