Arsenal extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table to five points over Manchester City following a weekend in which all three title contenders collected maximum points.
Liverpool also won, maintaining their place in the top-six conversation, while Chelsea and Aston Villa both dropped points in fixtures they will consider missed opportunities.

Tottenham Hotspur 1–4 Arsenal
Having drawn 2–2 at Wolverhampton Wanderers in midweek, Arsenal needed a response, and they produced one in commanding fashion at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Manchester City 2–1 Newcastle United
Manchester City returned to winning ways with a 2–1 home victory over Newcastle United on Saturday, a result that keeps them firmly in contention for the title despite Arsenal’s strong form. The match was not straightforward — Newcastle, a well-organized and physically competitive side, pulled a goal back and made the final stages uncomfortable — but City managed the game well enough to see it through.
Pep Guardiola’s squad continues to benefit from significant depth. The ability to rotate without any notable drop in performance level is a key advantage as the season enters its most congested phase, and City have shown across multiple title campaigns that they tend to accelerate rather than slow as fixtures pile up.

Nottingham Forest 0–1 Liverpool
Liverpool secured a 1–0 away win at Nottingham Forest on Sunday — a result that was professional rather than spectacular but entirely sufficient for the purpose. Forest, who are 17th in the table and in a relegation fight, made life difficult at the City Ground, as they tend to do, but Liverpool’s defensive solidity ensured there was no real threat to the clean sheet.
The win moves Liverpool to 45 points from 27 games, level with Chelsea and Manchester United, with the top-four battle intensifying around that points mark. Liverpool’s goal difference and recent defensive form could become a deciding factor as the season progresses.
They sit sixth currently, but the gap between fourth and sixth is negligible, and every result in this section of the table carries significant weight.
Chelsea 1–1 Burnley
Chelsea dropped two points at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, drawing 1–1 with Burnley — a result that will cause considerable frustration given Burnley’s position of 19th in the table and their status as one of the division’s weakest sides this season. Home games against bottom-three opposition are precisely the fixtures that top-four contenders need to convert into maximum points, and Chelsea failed to do so.
The draw leaves Chelsea fourth on 45 points, level with Manchester United and Liverpool below them. Chelsea have now drawn nine league games this season, the most in the top six, and that tendency to drop points in winnable fixtures is a pattern that needs addressing urgently.
Their goal difference and results in direct competition with their top-four rivals could ultimately be what costs them a Champions League place if this continues.
Aston Villa 1–1 Leeds United
Aston Villa were held to a 1–1 draw at home by Leeds United on Saturday, a result that does little for their momentum at a critical stage of the season.
Villa sit third on 51 points, which represents a solid position, but the six-point gap between them and the chasing pack — Chelsea, Manchester United, and Liverpool all on 45 — is not as comfortable as it may appear on paper.
Leeds are a mid-table side with little to play for at either end of the table, making this the kind of fixture Villa must be winning at home if they are to sustain a challenge for Champions League qualification.
A failure to take three points here, particularly with Chelsea and Liverpool both playing this weekend, represents a missed opportunity to extend the cushion. Emery’s side have an upcoming midweek fixture against Wolves, which offers an immediate chance to respond with a win.
Brighton & Hove Albion continued their consistent form with a 2–0 victory at Brentford, a comfortable away performance that moves them to 34 points in 14th. Brentford slip to seventh on 40 points after a flat home display.
Crystal Palace beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1–0 at Selhurst Park, a result that compounds Wolves’ deeply difficult season. They remain bottom of the table on 10 points from 28 games, having now lost 20 league fixtures. Their relegation looks certain barring a remarkable turnaround.
Fulham were the standout performers in the day’s early kick-offs, beating Sunderland 3–1 away from home to move to 37 points in tenth. It was a composed and well-executed performance from Marco Silva’s side, who continue to punch above expectations.
West Ham United and Bournemouth played out a goalless draw at the London Stadium. West Ham remain 18th on 25 points, and the pressure on them in the relegation battle is increasing with every dropped point.
Manchester United vs Everton — Sunday Preview
Manchester United have a game in hand on most of their top-four rivals, and they will look to use it when they travel to Hill Dickinson Stadium to face Everton on Sunday evening. United currently sit fifth on 45 points, level with Chelsea and Liverpool but outside the top four on goal difference.
Everton are ninth on 37 points — a mid-table side with no particular pressure on them heading into the fixture, which can sometimes make for an awkward opponent. United are favourites at approximately 50% probability of winning according to current projections, with Everton at 25% and the draw similarly assessed.
For United, the calculation is straightforward. A win moves them level with Chelsea in fourth, potentially above them depending on goal difference, and maintains their Champions League push with genuine credibility. A draw leaves them stagnant in a pack of three clubs all competing for the same positions.
A defeat begins to make their top-four hopes look precarious, particularly given how little daylight there is between the clubs involved.
United have the chance to apply pressure on the teams above them — but the margin for error at this stage of the season is minimal.
Title Race Standings & Outlook
Arsenal’s five-point lead over City is the most significant number in the title race right now, though City’s game in hand means the real gap could be as little as two points.
Arsenal’s superior goal difference and home record give them a marginal advantage, but City’s squad depth and experience of winning titles under pressure means nothing is close to settled.
Below the top two, the fight for Champions League places is arguably more compelling. Three clubs level on 45 points, a fourth six above them, and the fixtures becoming increasingly decisive. Aston Villa’s home form needs to improve. Chelsea’s draw habit needs breaking. Liverpool and United both need consistency over a run of games rather than isolated results.
The next four to six weeks will go a long way to determining how this season resolves at both ends of the top six.
