We Warned Him Several Times to Stop Beating His Wife, But He Did Not Stop Until He Killed Her — Father

The Limawa area of Minna, Niger State, has been left in shock and grief following the tragic death of Hauwa Isah, a 24-year-old woman who was allegedly beaten to death by her husband, Mohammed Sani. Hauwa, who was nine months pregnant at the time, succumbed to her injuries late on June 3, 2025, after a violent incident at her home. The case has reignited urgent conversations about domestic violence, community intervention, and the need for stronger protections for women in Nigeria.

As reported by the Daily Post News, eyewitnesses and neighbors said the abuse inflicted on Hauwa by her husband was not an isolated event. According to the father of the late Hauwa, the family had repeatedly warned Mohammed Sani to stop assaulting his daughter, but their pleas fell on deaf ears.

“This is not the first time he has laid hands on my daughter. We warned him several times, but he didn’t stop. Now he has killed her,” the grieving father told reporters, as quoted by the Daily Post News.

Residents of Limawa confirmed that Hauwa’s cries and distress were often heard from the couple’s home, but intervention was either delayed or ineffective. Halima Musa, a local resident, recounted that by the time neighbors gathered the courage to intervene, it was already too late—Hauwa had lost her life due to the severity of her injuries.

The Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed that Mohammed Sani was swiftly arrested and is currently in police custody in Minna. According to police reports, a distress call was received on the night of June 3, 2025, alerting authorities to the incident at the couple’s residence in Bani Hashimu Estate, Limawa ‘A’, Minna. Upon arrival, police found Hauwa lifeless on the floor with visible bloodstains. She was rushed to General Hospital Minna, where she was pronounced dead. Medical examination confirmed that she was about nine months pregnant at the time of her death.

The arrest and ongoing investigation have done little to quell the anger and sorrow felt by the community. Residents are demanding justice for Hauwa and calling for stronger measures to protect women from domestic violence and abuse. The case has highlighted the devastating consequences of unchecked domestic violence and the urgent need for systemic change.

Hauwa’s tragic death is not an isolated incident. Domestic violence remains a widespread and persistent issue in Niger State and across Nigeria. According to recent data, over 1,741 cases of gender-based violence were reported in Niger State in the past year alone, with domestic violence being the most common form. Despite the existence of laws such as the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act and the Child Rights and Enforcement Law, implementation and enforcement remain weak, and awareness of legal protections is low among the population.

Survivors of domestic violence often face barriers to justice, including familial pressure to withdraw cases, cultural stigma, and limited access to support services. Many cases go unreported, and those that are reported rarely result in convictions. The lack of specialized courts and limited funding for law enforcement further complicate efforts to address the problem.

In the wake of Hauwa’s death, there has been a renewed call for action from both the community and civil society organizations. Residents are urging authorities to ensure that justice is served and that perpetrators of domestic violence are held accountable. There is also a growing demand for increased awareness campaigns, better support services for survivors, and stronger legal protections for women.

NGOs and government agencies have been working to address the issue through capacity-building workshops, legal aid programs, and community outreach initiatives. The Director of the Gender and Domestic Violence Department at the Niger State Ministry of Justice has emphasized the need for collaboration between law enforcement, traditional leaders, and civil society to combat domestic violence effectively.

As the investigation into Hauwa’s death continues, her family, friends, and neighbors are left to mourn a life cut tragically short. The case serves as a powerful call to action for all stakeholders—government, law enforcement, community leaders, and ordinary citizens—to work together to prevent such tragedies in the future and to ensure that no more women suffer in silence.
