The leader of the House of Representatives, Gbajabiamila has given reasons why Nigerian policemen are not respected in the streets.
According to the house leader, most Nigerian policemen wear dirty uniforms and look very tattered. He said they do not only wear dirty uniforms but they wear rubber slippers too and the sight of them does not intimate anybody and that they need to command respect and not demand it.
“So people don’t even respect them or feel intimidated by their presence when they need to enforce the law. In other countries, the sight of a policeman and the gadgets he carries alone, prevent crime from happening. This is immediate recognition from the appearance of a policeman.
Gbajabiamila said this when the Acting Inspector General of Police, Usman Alkali Baba paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
The acting IGP, Baba thanked the Speaker and promised to upgrade the security agents under his watch with the help of the nation’s lawmakers.
